eLearning Project with Cairo University successfully completed (Jan. 2010)

The TEMPUS-funded project Cairo University ELearning Center (CUELC) held its public final workshop at Cairo University on January 10 in the presence of numerous representatives of Cairo University and the TEMPUS program.

Dean of Engineering Prof. Dr. Samir Shaheen and local project leader Prof. Magda Fayek presented the main results of the project. Prof. Dr. Matthias Jarke and Dr. Ralf Klamma from RWTH Aachen University as well as Prof. Katherine Maillet from the French Grande Ecole Institut National Telecommunication (INT) spoke as representatives of the other project partners.

Founded over 100 years ago, Cairo University is now the largest and most influential university in the middle East, with well over 200.000 students. With additional support also from industry partners such as HP, CUELC has successfully designed, installed and evaluated an infrastructure for the development and operation of technology-enhanced learning, using the Engineering School of Cairo University as a focal starting point. Within the project, over two thirds of all the courses in the department of electrical, computer, and communication engineering were developed as eCourses, and over 170 professors from 24 departments within Cairo University were trained in eLearning course development. An important additional highlight was the international cross-cultural validation of some of the developed course materials with students not just from Egypt but also from the European partner universities. Joint exercises and programming competitions for cross-cultural student teams led to mutual student visits with important networking effects. Overall, CUELC has been ranked as one of the most successful Tempus projects in Egypt in the past few years.

In a subsequent meeting of the CUELC team with Dr. Hany Hilal, Minister of Higher Education and Research in Egypt, further cooperation plans based on this very successful CUELC cooperation over three years were discussed.
