Matthias Jarke Appointed to CONNECT Advisory Forum
The Directorate General on Communication Networks, Content, and Technology
(CONNECT) of the European Commission has appointed Prof. Matthias Jarke to
the newly founded CONNECT Advisory Forum (CAF). The CAF kickoff meeting was
held in Brussels on February 28 under the direction of Director General
CONNECT is in large part responsible for the implementation of the European
Digital Agenda recently announced by Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes.
The CAF comprises 28 members, selected from several hundred nominees. From
Germany, two industry representatives were chosen in addition to Prof. Jarke.
A major responsibility of the CAF is to advise on the detailed
implementation of the planned EU research program HORIZON 2020 in its
aspects of computer science, information and communication technologies
(ICT). This includes ICT aspects of the HORIZON 2020 grand societal
challenges (e.g. demographics, energy, etc.) as well as enhancing European
industrial leadership in IT innovation and promoting excellence in science.
In addition to research funding, the CAF also advises on certain questions
of ICT regulation, simplification of bureaucratic procedures, and the
analysis of chances and risks for European individuals in their different
roles as people, citizens, and consumers.
