Festive Colloquium for Prof. Jarke

On November 24, 2017, RWTH Aachen’s Computer Science Department organized a festive colloquium on the occasion of Prof. Matthias Jarke’s 65th birthday.

After introductory greetings by Rector Ernst Schmachtenberg, Vice Dean Erhard Cramer, and Department Chair Martin Grohe, Prof. Armin Cremers, University of Bonn and long-standing founding co-director with Prof. Jarke at the Bonn-Aachen International Center for Information Technology (b-it), gave an overview of Prof. Jarke’s early career years in Hamburg, New York, and Passau. He was followed by Prof. Klaus Pohl, Informatik 5 graduate and Director of the paluno software systems engineering research center at the University of Duisburg-Essen, with a talk about the currently almost 27 years of Prof. Jarke’s Informatik 5 chair in Aachen. After thanks by Prof. Jarke, the colloquium ended with a joint speaker and faculty dinner in a forestal restaurant in the south of Aachen.

Prof. Jarke has been Professor of Databases and Information Systems since January 1991. From 1992-2000, he served as Chairman of the Computer Science Department, and since 1.1.2000, also as Executive Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT in Sankt Augustin, Aachen, Augsburg, and Bayreuth. Since late 2015, he co-leads both institutions with Prof. Stefan Decker, who also chaired the colloquium. Among other tasks, Prof. Jarke’s activities are currently focused on coordinating the computer science part of one of RWTH Aachen’s interdisciplinary excellence cluster full proposals.
