Prof. Jarke named RWTH Fellow 2020

Each year, the RWTH Fellowship recognizes two outstanding professors of RWTH Aachen University who combine a particularly strong research profile with special merits for the University as a whole. Rector and deans of RWTH Aachen have elected professors Christian Brecher (Production Engineering) and Matthias Jarke (Databases and Information Systems) as the RWTH Fellows 2020.

The ER Steering Committee has announced the recipient of the 2020 Peter P. Chen Award: Prof. Dr. Matthias Jarke, RWTH Aachen University, Germany.
Best Paper Award and Keynote at CAiSE‘20

On June 12, 2020, Martin Liebenberg (KBSG) and Prof. Matthias Jarke received the Best Paper Award at the 32 International Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering (CAiSE’20) for their paper “Information Systems Engineering for Digital Shadows: Concepts and Case Studies”. Moreover, Prof. Jarke delivered the final keynote address to the conference titled “Data Sovereignty and the Internet of Production”. CAiSE’20, originally planned in Grenoble, France, was this year organized as a video conference event which drew over 1.200 participations to discuss the 30 accepted papers (acceptance rate: 18%) and participate in further tutorials, workshop, and fora. Further information, including videos of the conference talks, are available through the website It is already the second time after 2016, that a paper from Informatik 5 received the best paper award at CAiSE, making us the internationally most successful team in this regard.
Strong interest in doctoral defense of Istvan Koren

Due to its organization as a video conference in its public part, Istvan Koren’s successful doctoral defense on May 8, 2020, was attended by almost 60 researchers and practitioners in several countries, showing the great interest in his thesis topic “DevOpsUse: Community-driven Continuous Innovation of Web Information Infrastructures”. The interdisciplinary examiner team with Professors Matthias Jarke, Günter Schuh (Production Management, PD Dr. Ralf Klamma, and Prof. Wil van der Aalst was chaired by Professor Hermann Ney. The key idea of the thesis, expanding the well-known DevOps approach by explicit user involvement in the infrastructuring process, is pursued further in the Excellence Cluster “Internet of Production” with Dr. Koren as the deputy area coordinator for the Infrastructure section.
Opening Ceremony for Aachen’s “Fraunhofer Center Digital Energy”

Fraunhofer FIT, together with Fraunhofer FKIE and professors from the electrical engineering faculty and the computer science department have started a series of major projects around the questions of stability, economic feasibility and attractiveness, technical safety, and IT security of future digitized energy distribution networks. These form the starting point for a “Fraunhofer Center Digital Energy” which brings together the necessary team of electrical engineers, software, data and IT security specialists, all the way up to the level of changing business processes under novel business models accompanying the growing chances and risks of renewable energy. The Center will be hosted in a new building on the RWTH Aachen University Industry Campus Melaten. In a ceremony held on April 28, 2020, BMBF State Secretary Thomas Rachel handed over a 5,1 mio. Euro grant for the first part of the initial planning and infrastructure set-up for the Center to the initiators Prof. Stefan Decker and Matthias Jarke. Keynote Talk at SmartGreens 2020

On May 2, Prof. Jarke delivered the opening keynote address at the 10th International Conference on Smart Cities and Green ICT Systems (SmartGreens 2020). The lecture titled “Digital Energy” summarized initial major research projects at our new Fraunhofer Center on Digital Energy and, due to the CoVid19 pandemic was delivered by video conference. Keynote at ICIS Doctoral Consortium

The International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) is the worldwide top conference for business informatics. ICIS 2019 is the first in the series to be held in Germany, attracting over 2.000 attendees to Munich. ICIS is preceded by an elaborate three-day doctoral consortium, in which forty participants carefully selected from several hundred nominations (one per university) debate their individual thesis ideas in small groups with two well-known faculty each. In addition, there is one industrial and one academic keynote talk. In his academic keynote on Dec. 13, 2019, Prof. Matthias Jarke used examples from Fraunhofer’s Industrial Data Space Initiative and RWTH Aachen’s excellence cluster Internet of Production excellence to discuss challenges and strategies for “Maintaining disciplinary excellence in an interdisciplinary world”.
Keynote on Inter-Organizational Data Sharing at ER 2019 in Salvador de Bahia/Brazil

Prof. Matthias Jarke presented a keynote titled “Inter-Organizational Data Sharing: From Goals to Policies to Code” jointly invited by several workshops of the 39th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER 2019) held in Salvador de Bahia, November 4, 2019. The presentation linked research in the DFG-funded Excellence Cluster “Internet of Production” to the concepts pursued in the Fraunhofer-led International Data Spaces initiative, aiming at an alliance-driven approach to data platform design not under control by single keystone players.
Lernen mit tragbaren Geräten: Herausgabe bei Springer

Den aktuellen Forschungsstand, Herausforderungen und Praxisbeispiele haben die Herausgeber Ilona Buchem (Beuth Hochschule für Technik Berlin), Ralf Klamma (Lehrstuhl Informatik 5, RWTH Aachen) und Fridolin Wild (Universität Oxford Brookes) in ihrem Buch „Perspectives on Wearable Enhanced Learning (WELL)“ beim angesehenen Wissenschaftsverlag Springer veröffentlicht. Durch die Gründung einer Arbeitsgruppe beim Europäischen Verband für technologiegestütztes Lernen (EATEL – European Association for Technology Enhanced Learning) wurde in mehreren Konferenzen und Workshops die Grundlagen für diese Sammlung von einschlägigen Aufsätzen und Reflektionen gelegt. Dieser Band umfasst 21 Kapitel in 7 Abschnitten, die ein weites Spektrum von der Technologie über das Design und die Pädagogik bis hin zu empirischen Forschungsansätzen reichen.
Fraunhofer ICT Dissertation Award for Dr. Erion Elmasllari

Im diesjährigen Wettbewerb um die beste in den 19 Forschungsinstituten des Fraunhofer-Verbunds Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologie abgeschlossene Doktorarbeit wurde Dr. Erion Elmasllari für seine Mitte 2018 an der RWTH Aachen verteidigte Dissertation „A Framework for the Successful Design and Deployment of Electronic Triage Systems” der 1. Preis zuerkannt. Der Preis wird auf der Jahrestagung der Gesellschaft für Informatik am 26.9.2019 in Kassel überreicht. Gutachter der Arbeit waren Prof. Dr. Matthias Jarke, Prof. Dr. Martina Ziefle und Prof. Dr. Thomas Rose.
