Mediating and Monitoring Electronic Commerce

Electronic commerce has focused on business between large companies or on consumer-orientieted business over the Internet. The MEMO project tries to close the gap between these two areas by supporting business-to-business electronic commerce between small- and medium-sized companies. Therefore, an electronic commerce broker system is being developed which supports the phases of business partner search, negotiation, and fulfillment.

Project participants besides Informatik V are the dutch ABN-AMRO-Bank as project coordinator, the Infolab of the University of Tilburg (NL), Origin Spain, and some user groups including the chamber of commerce in Aachen (IHK Aachen). The project has started in January 1999, and will end in June 2001.

The role of RWTH Aachen is to develop a metadata repository that forms the memory of the electronic commerce broker. The role of the repository is to provide a common access point for all information which is available in the broker system. On the one hand, this includes information which is integrated from external heterogeneous information sources, e.g. company profiles from the chambers of commerce and product profiles from the individual companies.

On the other hand, the repository provides a storage facility for context information of an electronic commerce transaction provided by the different modules search, negotiation, and fulfilment. The information is used for performing a transaction in an effective way. Furthermore, tracability facilities will be enabled which makes process histories possible. Sophisticated meta data management facilities will be used to adapt the memory of the broker to the needs of the clients.
