Future gazing Technology Enhanced Learning - The Roadmap for the unknown Learning Landscape - EU FP7 ICT SA
Overview
This project focuses on ‘exploratory/Roadmapping activities for fundamentally new forms of learning’ to support take-up of those new forms, via ‘Awareness building and knowledge management on the results of EU RTD projects in TEL’ and ‘socio-economic evaluations in education and for SMEs’. We gather information on the current, desired and emerging position of TEL, and on awareness and appropriation (by educators and SMEs) of RTD results in TEL. We codify that information using state of the art knowledge management tools/ methods, at three levels of scale:
- Macro (political, economic, social, technological, legal,
environmental),
- Meso (organisation of education and training systems and institutions), and
- Micro (enacted
paradigms of learning and teaching).
Cutting across these levels of scale is the categorisation of changes as exogenous or endogenous relative to forms of learning and to the TEL community. This provides direct input to TEL-relevant decisions at all three levels, including economic, political, and research discussions. With a 10-year horizon, we co-develop a portfolio of stakeholder-specific roadmaps and influence maps, to gain insights into fundamentally new forms of Learning, Education and Training activities (LET) and into what makes for effective transfer and scalability. Our collaborative development approach leads to a Multi-perspective Dynamic Roadmap to track, anticipate and manage knowledge about new forms of LET and their impact on TEL. This extends established TEL Roadmapping methods in novel, powerful and cost-effective ways, with high potential for sustainability and for targeting each stakeholder’s goals. Outcomes include well-grounded recommendations on TEL and LET innovations, plus a platform and a sustainable dynamic process that will foster collaboration and consensus-building across specialized communities and stakeholder groups.
First Year Achievements by the ACIS Group
In the first year of the project (October 2010 - September 2011), our ACIS Group has produced several key contributions to the project. We hosted and developed services for the project’s service portal for the European Commission at http://www.learningfrontiers.eu. We extended the Mediabase, which was established by i5 in the FP6 project PROLEARN, with new information on collaboration networks in EU funded projects, as well as with publications related to TEL, thus supporting TEL-MAP in achieving its mapping and roadmapping objectives.
We were able to achieve synergies within i5 by
- adopting and adapting cutting-edge widget developments from the ROLE project and by
- adopting the established academic event recommender system (AERCS) developed at i5.
In 2011, we have represented and disseminated TEL-Map results in several project deliverables, at IEEE ICALT in Georgia, US (see the slides of the plenary address below), as well as at ADVTEL and EC-TEL in Palermo, Italy.
Second Year Achievements by the ACIS Group
- We conceived, developed, deployed, and evaluated an embeddable dashboard for supporting roadmapping activities by providing flexible and personalized visualizations of data indexed in Mediabase: this "Learning Frontiers Dashboard" is available to the public on the learningfrontiers.eu portal. Along with the dashboard, we provided Mediabase queries and visualizations for all Mediabase data sources, addressing different stakeholders (e.g. policy makers, observers, authors). The results of this effort were published at I-KNOW 2012.
- Extension of the AERCS system as part of Mediabase with a conference and journal series analysis tool, as well as a series comparison tool. These tools enable stakeholders to view, analyze, compare, and benchmark the development and status of conference and journal author communities based on social network measures. The AERCS database was also updated in 2012 with data from DBLP and CiteSeerX. We now have close to 1.95 million bibliographic records of published papers and books in the database (+30% compared to Year 1), published in more than 4,400 conference series and journals by 1.13 million authors.
- We extended Mediabase TEL blog index together with TEL-Map partner CETIS at University of Bolton. At the end of Y1, we had 802 blogs indexed in Mediabase, of which 163 blogs were manually tagged to be genuine TEL blogs; by end of Y2 we have 1,200 blogs total, with all added blogs being TEL blogs. The total number of genuine TEL blogs is now 561, the number of indexed TEL blog posts amounts to more than 80,000 posts.
- We also added 40 "new" TEL projects (introducing 152 new organizations) funded under the EC’s eTEN and PSP programmes to the project database. All new projects were added to the project space on the learningfrontiers.eu portal. The project space also features (1) for each project an automatically computed list of predecessor and successor projects based on social network analysis (see EC-TEL 2012 paper) and (2) an interactive geographical map overlay for aggregate figures on funding and participation in EU projects in the area of TEL.
- Joint work by TEL-Map and the EU Lifelong Learning Programme project TeLLNet (Teachers' Lifelong Learning Networks) at the 11th International Conference on Web-based Learning (ICWL 2012) in Sinaia, Romania. The paper addresses approaches to exploiting learning analytics in learning blogospheres, for instance to identify bursty topics in blogs, to identify social capital, and other things, based on the TEL-Map Mediabase.
- The TEL-Map Mediabase was presented in a featured article "A Mediabase for Technology Enhanced Learning in Europe" in the open-access newsletter published by the IEEE Taskforce on Learning Technologies. In addition we published a TEL conference community analysis paper for the Educational Technology & Society journal. This paper reports on the role of academic conferences in TEL based on data and analyses of conference community development patterns identified in the TEL-Map Mediabase. The paper also includes a benchmark of TEL communities compared to established conference communities.
- We conceived an algorithm that extracts a daily digest of "hot blog posts" from the TEL blogosphere indexed in the Mediabase. The identified blog posts are automatically published every morning to the TEL-Map twitter timeline. By setting up a paper.li newsletter based on those tweets we achieved an effective and sustainable daily digest of utterances from the social web of relevance to TEL-Map and Learning Frontiers stakeholders. The daily digest is prominently displayed on the portal homepage.
