Learning in the Real World using Augmented Reality and Wearable Technology

Learning and training with Augmented Reality has moved out of the experimental space into the coming mainstream – thanks to the AR learning system, MirageXR, described in this article. MirageXR is open source and available cross-platform for iOS, Android, and Hololens, implements the IEEE standard for AR learning experience models (P1589-2020), and links with the freshly developed Moodle back-end repository plugin. These three building blocks pave the way for massive scaling of AR learning in Higher Education: an open source state-of-the-art cross-platform app with innovative features such as GhostTrack and, soon, holographic Ais; a standardised content model that ensures long-term preservation, network effects, and a rich eco-system of production tools; and the integration with the widely used learning management system Moodle. This promises a prosperous future for ‘learning in the real-world’, opening up formerly inaccessible areas to systematic Higher Education that previously were extremely restrictive with ‘looking over the shoulder’ type of approaches. The next challenge now is to reach a million AR learning activities, globally.
