Metadata Management to Improve the Quality in Data Warehouses and Business Data Repositories

Year 2000

When integrating data from different information sources, data quality and different semantics of data play an important role because the sources might have been created with conflicting goals in different environments. We address this problem by developing a framework for quality-oriented design and evolution of integrated information systems. The approach is based on the modelling of metadata for the semantics and the quality of information systems. The relationships and correspondences between different information systems are formalised to support system integration. Furthermore, the quality factors of the information systems are expressed in a formal model and linked to user requirements to check whether the requirements are fulfilled. The framework is developed in the context of data warehouse systems. Special attention is given to the generalisability of the results to other kinds of information systems. The present approach will be evaluated in the context of business-to-business electronic commerce.
