Dr. Michael Derntl is a Research Associate at the Advanced Community Information Systems (ACIS) Group, Information Systems and Databases chair (Informatik 5), RWTH Aachen University. Currently he is senior researcher and R&D manager in the following EU funded projects:

  • LAYERS – Scaling Up Technologies for Informal Learning in SME Clusters (EU FP7 Integrated Project)
  • METIS – Meeting Teachers' Co-Design Needs by Means of Integrated Learning Environments (EU LLP Multilateral Project)
  • GaLA – Games and Learning Alliance (EU FP7 Network of Excellence)

His completed projects at RWTH include TEL-Map, an FP7 Support Action on Roadmapping for Technology Enhanced Learning, and LD-Grid, a co-funded network of European researchers on Learning Design. Before joining RWTH in March 2011, Michael was engaged as a senior researcher on learning technology standards, metadata and interoperability in the EU eContentplus project ICOPER as well as in various other projects in the area of educational technology. Michael studied information systems ("Wirtschaftsinformatik") at the University of Vienna (MSc in 2001, PhD in 2005). During his master studies he also worked as a freelance software developer in industry and office software projects. His PhD thesis, which was published as a book in 2006, dealt with novel applications of design patterns to process and system engineering in the technology enhanced learning domain. From 2002 to 2011 he had various posts as researcher and lecturer at the Faculty of Computer Science, University of Vienna. He was vice-head of the Research Lab for Educational Technologies, predecessor of the CSLEARN unit at University of Vienna, from 2005-2010. He has given lectures, seminars and labs on programming, databases, web engineering, software architecture, business information systems, software engineering, and most recently on web science and high-tech entrepreneurship. In summer 2008 he was a visiting scholar at the University of Sydney.
