Dr. Michael Derntl was a senior research associate and project manager at the Advanced Community Information Systems (ACIS) Group, Information Systems and Databases chair (Informatik 5) at RWTH Aachen University. In October 2015 he joined the eScience-Center at University of Tübingen.

At the DBIS chair he was researching, developing and managing in the following EU funded ICT projects:

  • LAYERS – Scaling Up Technologies for Informal Learning in SME Clusters (FP7 Integrated Project)
  • METIS – Meeting Teachers' Co-Design Needs by Means of Integrated Learning Environments (LLP Multilateral Project)
  • SAGE – Serious Games Pathway within the Undergraduate IT Programs (Tempus Joint Project)
  • GaLA – Games and Learning Alliance (FP7 Network of Excellence)
  • TEL-Map – Roadmapping for Technology Enhanced Learning (FP7 Support Action)
  • TeLLNet – Teachers' lifelong learning networks (LLP Project)
  • LD-Grid  – network of European researchers on Learning Design (STELLAR theme team)

Michael has initiated and maintained several open source software projects during project work and supervision of theses at the DBIS chair, including:

  • D-VITA: Dynamic Visual Topic Analytics
  • SyncMeta: Framework for Near Real-Time (Meta)modeling in the Web Browser
  • OpenGLM: Open Graphical Learning Modeller

Before joining RWTH in March 2011, Michael was engaged as a research professional on learning technology standards, metadata and interoperability in the EU eContentplus project ICOPER as well as in various other projects in the area of advanced learning technologies. Michael studied business informatics ("Wirtschaftsinformatik") at the University of Vienna (MSc in 2001, PhD in 2005). During his master studies he worked as a freelance software developer in industry and office software projects. His PhD thesis, which was published as a book in 2006, dealt with novel applications of design patterns to process and system engineering in the technology enhanced learning domain.

From 2002 to 2011 he had various posts as researcher and lecturer at the Faculty of Computer Science, University of Vienna. He was vice-head of the Research Lab for Educational Technologies, predecessor of the CSLEARN unit at University of Vienna, from 2005 to 2011.

He has given lectures, seminars and labs on programming, databases, web engineering, software architecture, business information systems, software engineering, and most recently on web science and high-tech entrepreneurship. In summer 2008 he was a visiting scholar at the University of Sydney. He has received several outstanding paper awards at international conferences, among them three awards while at the DBIS chair (best full paper at ICALT 2012, as well as best demo and best poster at ICWE 2015).
