Scientific Data Management

Type Lecture
Term SS 15
Mentor(s)
Assistant(s)

The lecture will give a practical introduction into the data management in scientific applications (e.g., in life sciences or engineering). In addition to the theoretical foundations, the participants will learn to use state-of-the-art technologies to manage large scale data sets.

Topics

  • Introduction to data-intensive scientific applications
  • Metadata management & extraction
  • Data modeling & integration
  • Semi-structured data management
  • Management & organization of scientific workflows
  • Data ownership, privacy, security

Prerequisites

Good knowledge of database systems in theory and practice is required.

Organization & Schedule

The lecture and exercise sessions will be combined. The lectures will provide the theoretical basis for the exercises, which will be used to develop a course project. Students are expected to bring their own devices (laptops) to the practical tasks during the exercise sessions (e.g., installation and configuration of software systems, definition of data workflows, etc.). Grading will be based on the completion of the course project and an exam at the end of the term.
