The aim of this thesis is to conceive a framework for exploring 3D Objects by means of collaborative annotation and storytelling, that can be used in communities of practice.

Tagging is of great importance in Web2.0 settings because it provides good support for searching and linking content across the Internet. Through use of online collaborative technologies and semantic support, the precision of the metadata describing different types of resources can be drastically improved. Furthermore, such a solution is well suitable with evolving shared repertoires within communities of practice. With the increase in importance and presence of 3D Objects on the Web, tagging technologies can be used to highlight certain characteristics of the objects for varios reasons specific to domains such as cultural heritage, learning, etc. During and after the tagging process, an (implicit) storyline is created around the objects in focus.

Based on previous research on storytelling and tagging, this thesis proposes an information system that can reveal the non-linear stories behind 3D Objects.  By making use of cutting edge Web technologies e.g. RESTful WS, HTML5, Javascript, Web Components, etc. the work should enable the collaborative annotation of 3D Objects on the Web with media artifacts. Based on this information, the thesis should develop the technical and conceptual means for aggregating non-linear stories around the 3D Objects, that can be consumed individually or collaboratively by community users and that can scaffold informal learning. The final version of the system should provide community-based stories to be consumed on mobile and online environments.

Prerequisites

Experience with server-side and client-side programming languages (e.g. Java, Javascript) is required. Interest/Experience in RESTful web services, web science, mobile-first application development is a plus.
