The aim of this thesis is to conceive a framework for collaborative semantic annotation of multimedia via RESTful Web Services with respect to communities of practice.
Tagging is of great importance in Web2.0 settings because it provides good support for searching and linking content across the Internet. Through use of online collaborative technologies and semantic support, the precision of the metadata describing different types of resources can be drastically improved. Furthermore, such a solution is well suitable with evolving shared repertoires within communities of practice.
There are several tools used for annotating multimedia or resources, some of them using ontologies and other semantic functionality. The thesis aims to make use of cutting edge Web technologies to achieve the enrichment of metadata, e.g. RESTful WS, XMPP, HTML5, Javascript. The work will involve research on standards such as RDFa, OWL, Linked Data, MPEG-7 and Ontology for Media Resources. The final version of the system should use resources from the W3C Media Annotations Working Group, in order to provide community-based semantic annotations for any multimedia content, for mobile or online environments.
