Automatic for the People - Open Badge based Learning Assessment

Assigning automatically badges that reflect the learning progress of self-directed learners.

Learning Analytics, in particular automatic learning assessment, is a key technology for self-directed learning in the absence of formal learning institutions with their support for testing, examining, and grading. Open Badges have been introduced as an informal assessment of learning progress in informal learning scenarios such as game-based learning. However, the assessment of learning progress is still manual work in many learning environments or defined by very simple rules not reflecting learning progress at all. In this bachelor thesis, we make use of learning traces recorded in a responsive open learning environment (ROLE, Serious Game Framework) and advanced learning analytics tools (GLEANER, MOBSoS. xAPI). Goal of the bachelor thesis is to start a repository of generic learning progress indicators which can be more easily adapted for personal learning environments (PLEs) and automatically evaluated and visualized. The evaluation is based on real data sets coming from serious games and informal learning scenarios from a large EU project. Bachelor students with interests in modern Web engineering and Web analytics are welcome. Good programming skills are required.
