The task of analysing data is a highly interactive process in which several steps (e.g., integration, visualization, classification, etc.) have to be done until an interesting information item can be derived. Data analysis tasks have to be often repeated for similar data sets, e.g., in scientific data management in life sciences, data from different but similar experiments have to be compared. However, the current tools for data analytics require a lot of user interaction as they lack a formalization of the data processing workflow which would enable application of data analysis steps to reoccuring problems. Also, the reproducability and traceability would be enabled by a formal description of the data analysis process.

In this thesis, a framework should be developed in which such interactive processes are formalized to enable repeatability, reproducability, and traceability. To achieve this goal, the following issues should be addressed:
  • Evaluation and selection of appropriate frameworks for visual analytics which provide mechanisms to realize the planned extensions;
  • Design of a model for interactive data analysis processes
  • Implementation of the model in the framework which has been selected in step 1
  • Evaluation for some analysis tasks in life science or/and a different domain
