Immersive 3D Presentations for Education

Lectures convey 2D content on slides that are projected onto a wall but the understanding of 3D structures is important in anatomy courses or engineering. Moreover, the legibility varies based on the position in the lecture hall due to the angle and distance of the viewer which can influence the learning efficiency. Mixed Reality has the ability to immerse the viewer in the presentation. Since participants can use their own hardware, e.g. smartphones, to view 3D presentations, content can be positioned individually at the optimal location for every person. Additionally, presentations can vary in scale, ranging from miniature 3D models that are displayed on the table of every member in the audience to above-life size close-ups. Lecturers can use the same 3D presentation for remote teaching if face-to-face lectures are not possible.

The aim of this thesis is to conceptualize and realize an immersive 3D presentation framework to explore how Mixed Reality technology can be used in lectures. A challenge of this project is to envision an editing environment for lecturers that allows them to set up such 3D presentations in advance. The author should be able to compose the 3D objects for the presentation. Moreover, there should be an animation control which allows the lecturer to define the movement of 3D objects. Lecturers should be able to save the defined animations and can play them during the presentation at the press of a button, e.g. to move an object into focus. As a basis, an existing collaborative visualization framework with an avatar system can be used that works on the Microsoft HoloLens, HTC Vive and smartphones. On a conceptual level, suitable metaphors should be found to transfer elements of 2D presentations, e.g. slides, to 3D. During the realization phase, a focus should be put on selecting interaction techniques that allow lecturers to quickly construct such 3D presentations in an iterative and effortless manner.
