QoS evaluation of IP multimedia services based on service differentiation over the mobile networks

The recent years have witnessed the striking increase in mobile broadband subscribers and their traffic volume per subscriber. An obvious reason to this trend is the attractive data tariffs by operators e.g., flat-rate package and, on the other hand, the introduction of more advanced smart phone applications in the market. A recent research by ABI shows that multimedia applications are the main reason of European users to have smart phones. However, from the network perspective, provisioning high profile multimedia applications over the bandwidth-constrained cellular networks is not simply straight forward.  Quality of Service (QoS) has always been an issue in such scenarios and network over-provisioning is relatively not an economical solution.  Thus, the operators have to employ more sophisticated control and policy enforcement mechanism in order to ensure the quality of individual services running over their network. More precisely, they require a precised way to do service differentiation and apply QoS policies accordingly.  

The aim of the thesis is to study the end-user Quality of Experience (QoE) over the operator’s cellular network by employing policy enforcement based on the service differentiation of the running services. In the first phase of the thesis, an optimized way of service differentiation is to be investigated based on the 3GPP-IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), which can now be seen as an application/service layer in the LTE-Evolved Packet System (EPS). For this purpose, the existing REST-interfaced Mobile Services Platform (MSP) will be used to host and serve multimedia services over the Fraunhofer IMS testbed, OpenIMS. Additionally, the MSP is required to be extended in order to convey client-requested QoS information to the Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF). In the second phase of the thesis, the OpenIMS policy manager will be used as a PCRF in order to introduce both static and dynamic network policies based on the standardized QoS classes of 3G and 4G mobile systems. In order to employ the right policies in the network, the policy manager talks with the OpenIMS policy enforcement entity, PCEF, acting as a diff-serv router and controlling the network traffic. Thus, the PCEF will be introduced as a data path proxy in the MSP in order to transmit all the data traffic through it.  Finally, as a proof-of-concept, an RTP based audio/video streaming service will be developed for MSP which alongside with other existing services will be used to perform rigorous testing and performance evaluation.
