The aim of this work is to develop a formal characterization of adaptive functionality in a system-independent manner and to implement it using existing Web-based learning repositories.

Adaptive hypermedia systems operate usually on a closed corpus of documents, where documents and relationships between them are known to the system at design time. This implies a lack of re-usability and interoperability between adaptive systems. A challenge is to design open corpus adaptive hypermedia systems, which can operate on a set of documents that is not known at design time and can change (but may use standard meta-data). The aim of this work is to develop a formal characterization of adaptive functionality in a system-independent manner, which describes the adaptation functionality together with the required processing data that refers to all aspects of the adaptation process: the adaptation-specific information, the user characteristics, the learning resource meta-data, and the run-time data. This approach should be realized and demonstrated using existing Web-based learning repositories, ideally in the form of widgets providing recommendations and notifications.

Prerequisites

The applicant should be interested in e-learning and have experience with Java programming.
