The objective of this bachelor thesis is to realize and enhance AERCS as a visualization tool for scientific work published in CEUR workshop proceedings series. CEUR-WS.org is a publication service of Sun SITE Central Europe operated by Tilburg University with support of RWTH Aachen University. Since its start in 1995, the number of volumes published per year has grown steadily. In 2011, CEUR-WS.org published about 10000 papers distributed over roughly 700 workshop proceedings. CEUR-WS proceedings volumes are indexed by DBLP.

In Computer Science, academic events such as conferences, workshops, symposiums, etc. play an important role as a major publication and dissemination outlet. They provide researchers a discussion forum to present research work and results, and also bring them together to have academic communities. Research community analysis and visualization are performed to provide researchers an insight into communities. In a previous master thesis, a prototype system called AERCS (A SNA based approach Academic Event Recommender System for Computer Scientists) was developed which aimed providing recommendation and visualization tools for academic events. A model for academic events and scientific communities is already realized. Data is imported from DBLP and EventSeer.net – two important bibliographic repositories in Computer Science. The objective of this bachelor thesis is to realize and enhance AERCS as a visualization tool for scientific work published in CEUR workshop proceedings series(CEUR-WS.org). CEUR-WS.org is a publication service of Sun SITE Central Europe operated by Tilburg University with support of RWTH Aachen University. Since its start in 1995, the number of volumes published per year has grown steadily. In January 2008, CEUR-WS.org published about 5000 papers distributed over roughly 300 workshop proceedings. A subset of CEUR-WS proceedings volumes is indexed by DBLP. During this thesis, the data set is academic events and communities extracted from publications and proceedings in CUER-WS.org. A relational database schema is used to describe and store the information about events and communities. Community visualization is performed using yFiles AJAX – a graph visualization tool. Social Network Analysis (SNA) is employed to perform the analysis on communities. We look forward to working with bachelor candidates who are interested in SNA, information visualization and Web 2.0.
