Systematic Evaluation Procedures of Mixed Reality Learning Applications

Mixed reality provides many opportunities for learning applications in formal and informal education. In previous projects, we created different learning applications for various use cases. The applications target technologies like the Microsoft HoloLens, HTC Vive, Oculus Quest 2 and smartphones. Initial pilot evaluations of these applications have already been conducted. However, we would like to have a more detailed and systematic analysis of the application’s characteristics in their intended use cases.

Hence, the goal of this thesis is to conceptualize and conduct several large scale evaluations of the existing applications on the different devices at schools or university courses. In this context, the available evaluation setups need to be explored and identified whether they are suitable for mixed reality evaluations. Another interesting point regards conducting remote evaluations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here, a closer look should be taken at the possibilities especially for smartphone-based applications and the options that are available to stream views of head-mounted displays to evaluators. Based on the found suitable evaluation techniques and setups, multiple evaluations should be conducted at educational institutes which lead to new insights about the mixed reality learning applications.
