A Research Agenda for Mobile and Pervasive Healthcare -
Prof. Upkar Varshney

Pervasive healthcare can be defined as healthcare to anyone, anytime, and anywhere by removing locational, time and other restraints while increasing both the coverage and quality of healthcare. The broad definition includes prevention, healthcare maintenance, personalized health monitoring, incidence detection and management, and, emergency intervention, transportation and treatment. In this talk, pervasive healthcare technologies and applications, including health and medication monitoring, telemedicine, and various health records, will be presented. The roles of QoS, sensors and mobile networks, and context and location-awareness in healthcare will also be discussed. Many research problems related to the quality of data, cognitive load and decision making in healthcare will be discussed. The challenges and solutions related to the elderly in the independent living are also included. One of the goals of this talk is to create a forum for research in this area by setting up a broad research agenda.

Prof. Upkar Varshney is Associate Professor of CIS at Georgia State University, Atlanta. He received a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Telecom from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1995. His interests include pervasive healthcare, wireless networks and mobile commerce and has authored over 140 papers in journals and conferences. He is the founding chair of International Pervasive Health Conference (2006) and is the author of Pervasive Healthcare Computing book (2009). He has delivered several keynote speeches and has also received multiple teaching awards. He has also served on the editorial boards of about 20 journals including IEEE Transactions on IT in BioMedicine and Decision Support Systems.
