To strengthen a sustainable culture of interdisciplinary cooperation, of quality-assured, structured medical documentation, as well as of Germany-wide availability of specialist knowledge and research findings, clinical, epidemiological, and systems-medical researchers, scientists of medical informatics, as well as Chief Information Officers and IT staff members from all three university hospitals work closely together.

During the project, the IT infrastructure at all three sites will be advanced and harmonized, to enable data exchange between information systems for healthcare and for research. To meet this objective data integration centers will be established to support structured medical and study documentations in clinical and research IT, store data and documents in internationally standardized formats (HL7 CDA, HL7 FHIR, etc.) for curation and analysis, and to exchange these by means of internationally standardized communication and security procedures (IHE).

Three use cases (antibiotic stewardship, algorithmic surveillance of intensive care patients, and a phenotyping platform) will serve as demonstrators for the data exchange, the functional capability and effectiveness of the data integration centers.

To strengthen Medical Informatics in training and continuing education, all three sites will establish new professorships and have developed an extensive, structured program of study courses.

Based on our cooperation regarding documentation, data storage, data exchange and the technical implementation of the data integration centers, as well as on the basis of our joint education efforts, SMITH will sustainably strengthen clinical research and patient care in Germany.
