Student Assistant (HiWi) for Research and Development on LLM-based Semantic Data Management (12h/week)

October 9th, 2025

We are looking for a student assistant to support the further development of the LLM-based tool KONDA for semantic annotation and knowledge graph creation for research data.

Job Type HiWi
Extent 10-15h
Application Deadline 2025/10/22
Status Open
Contact(s) Soo-Yon Kim

Data-driven work increasingly requires sharing and connecting data across different contexts.

Our group develops tools that make data easier to understand, link, and reuse. In our ongoing work on the tool KONDA, we explore how LLMs can support the semantic annotation and structuring of research data, enabling researchers to create data annotations and knowledge graphs with minimal technical effort. To advance this system, we are looking for a student assistant to help extend, deploy, and evaluate the tool.

Tasks:

  • Further development and optimization of the KONDA web application
    • Deployment of open-source language models (e.g., via Ollama or HuggingFace)
    • Implementation of a lightweight, demonstrable version of the system
    • Improvement of scalability and performance (e.g., efficient handling of large datasets)
  • Experimentation with real-world or synthetic datasets to evaluate tool performance
  • Documentation and participation in research publications

What we offer:

  • Hands-on research at the intersection of AI and semantic technologies
  • Organize your working hours as you see fit
  • Possibility of using the institute’s working spaces
  • Part of a young research & teaching group and community of institute-affiliated peers
  • Possibility to explore related topics for a thesis

Prerequisites:
  • Experience or strong interest in LLMs, applied AI, semantic technologies, and data management
  • Proficiency in web development frameworks, e.g., Go, React, HTMX
  • Preferrable: Experience with graph database systems, e.g. Neo4j
  • Preferrable: Familiarity with interoperability concepts, e.g., ontologies, RDF, FAIR principles
