Information Systems & Databases
The Chair of Databases and Information Systems (i5) develops methods and technologies to link knowledge and make it applicable. Specifically, our staff works together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology (of which Prof. Decker is the director) on projects such as the National Research Data Infrastructure, the Cluster of Excellence “Internet of Production”, GAIA-X, the Medical Informatics Initiative, and many other projects and infrastructures. Important topics here include knowledge graphs, the Personal Health Train, and machine learning from these graphs, privacy, or how 3D environments can improve learning.
Informatik 5 is headed by Prof. Dr. Stefan Decker, who also heads the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT. Prof. Decker is also a Scientific Director of the Bonn-Aachen International Center for Information Technology (B-IT). He succeeds the chair’s founder Prof. Dr. Matthias Jarke who held the chair from 1991-2021.
Affiliated to Informatik 5 are the teaching and research areas for Knowledge-based Systems/Cognitive Robotics(Prof. Gerhard Lakemeyer, Ph.D.), Visual Knowledge Management/Life Science Informatics (Prof. Dr. Thomas Berlage), Cooperation Systems/CSCW (Prof. Wolfgang Prinz, Ph.D.), Media Informatics/ Media Processes (Prof. Dr. Thomas Rose) and Data Stream Management and Analysis (Prof. Dr. Sandra Geisler).
