Alexander Neumann and Aaron Conrardy, from the Chair of Databases and Information Systems at RWTH Aachen University, have been honored with a “Special Honorable Mention” Award at the 22nd International Conference on Web-based Learning (ICWL 2023) held in Sydney, Australia, from November 26th to 28th, 2023.
Their paper “Motivating Learners with Gamified Chatbot-Assisted Learning Activities” addresses a challenge in educational technology: Sustain learning engagement with educational chatbots. Despite the potential of chatbots in academic settings, their effectiveness has been hindered by low interaction rates, mainly due to limited user engagement and conversational capabilities. In this work, the authors developed a gamified quiz chatbot designed to boost student engagement. The bot aims to enhance the educational experience and maintain students’ interest over time by integrating gamification elements.
The presented work has been carried out in the context of the BMBF project tech4compKI.

We are proud to continue our presence at the ICWL conference, a tradition notably shaped and fostered by our late esteemed colleague, Ralf Klamma. His dedicated efforts in organizing past editions of the ICWL, notably in 2009 in Aachen and, more recently, in 2019 in Magdeburg, have left a lasting impact on the conference and our community.
